ABOUT STEPHEN VOKSHORI
An exceptional advocate. A big picture thinker. Honest, tough, and fair.
Stephen was first attracted to the law because it draws on diverse talents and skills while performing a valuable public service.
He stays because it’s rewarding to help a financially defeated family find their voice and footing again.
Stephen’s early legal career involved a number of positions representing mortgage companies and banks, including managing partner at Taylor & Vokshori, a prominent real estate law firm, in-house legal counsel for a sizeable commercial and residential real estate company, litigation consultant with Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, and litigation associate at Demler, Armstrong & Rowland.
Over the years, Stephen grew painfully aware that consumers are grossly underrepresented and the cards unfairly stacked. Time and time again he saw consumers and mortgage holders being poorly treated, taken advantage of, or stripped of everything they had in a one-sided battle against a bank or mortgage company with far more resources and ample legal support. Stephen was frustrated and uneasy about the patterns he was seeing.
That’s when he made a decision to turn the tables. In 2008, Stephen launched the Vokshori Law Group determined to use his knowledge and experience with the financial institutions to level the playing field for underrepresented consumers.
Today, at Vokshori Law, Stephen and his team represent consumers with all aspects of bankruptcy, insolvency issues in business transactions, debt restructuring, loan modifications and related civil litigation proceedings. Stephen is also experienced in estate planning and trust administration, including business succession planning for family and other closely held enterprises.
A true advocate, Stephen understands the importance of community service and regularly devotes time to delivering needed pro bono legal assistance. Volunteering with Public Counsel’s general relief advocacy program, Stephen argued to protect the rights of people in the welfare system that were homeless or at risk of becoming so. He also provided free legal assistance to UCLA students through UCLA’s Student Legal Services program, counseling students on a wide variety of legal issues.
These days, Stephen spends his free time at Public Counsel’s Consumer Law Project & Debtor Assistance Project in representing below median income debtors with Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. He also provides assistance to low-income tenants fighting against illegal evictions and unlawful detainer actions – a troubling result of the subprime mortgage foreclosure crisis.
A Magna Cum Laude graduate from USC’s Marshall School of Business, Stephen elected to attend the UCLA School of Law for his Juris Doctor. While in UCLA’s Business Law and Policy Program, he exhibited academic excellence in Real Estate, Corporate, and Finance law, and became a recipient of the Stephen E. Claman Scholarship. These early inclinations towards business and a knack for real estate law have flourished and grown into a true talent for tackling problems, setting goals, and finding creative solutions.
